CATERHAM Cars has shut its doors for the final time.

The iconic car company was formed in the town 40 years ago but on Sunday waved goodbye to its base in Station Avenue.

David Ridley, chief commercial officer at the showroom, said: "It was the last chance to say goodbye to the town.

"It is a very emotional time for all of us."

The company held an auto jumble sale at the showroom on Sunday of all the spare parts it had gathered over the years.

"Much like you gather things in your loft, we had a lot of parts that we wanted to offer to people," said Mr Ridley.

Bacon butties, burgers and tea and coffee were served to visitors.

Caterham Cars put the town on the world map last year when it launched a Formula One team.

It will keep its original name, despite moving to Three Bridges in Crawley next week.

"We want to carry on it's historical value of the name," said Mr Ridley.

"We are proud that we come from Caterham."

The Station Avenue site has been sold by the landowners and the garage will be demolished to make way for 35 retirement flats, due to be built by developers Churchill Retirement Living, by May 2014.

Caterham Cars was established in the town in 1973. Chart singer Chris Rea and former Formula One driver Jonathan Palmer are among those who have visited the Caterham showroom to buy vehicles.

Mr Ridley added: "We are very sad to be leaving, but I hope our customers will make the trip to Crawley to see us."
