Joe McElligott rues luck as South Park can only draw

SOUTH Park boss Joe McElligott said bad luck played its part as his side took only one point from a possible six this week.

Park lost 1-0 in a fiery encounter with Camberley Town on Saturday, before dropping two points at home on Tuesday night thanks to a second-half equaliser from Bedfont Sports, which cancelled out Steve Wilson's first-half header.

McElligott said both goals that his side conceded were avoidable, but pointed to missed fouls on his players in the build-ups on each occasion as the kind of bad luck his side has endured.

"It has been a disappointing week for us and the luck has gone against us, but you get that sometimes and we have to move on," he said.

"Perhaps if the free kicks had been given for fouls on JJ [O'Sullivan] on Saturday and Jack [Stafford] on Tuesday, we might not have conceded, but sometimes these things go against you."

And McElligott said that arguably his side did not do enough to win the game on Tuesday at Whitehall Lane.

"We didn't create enough and probably had to settle for a point," he said.

"Bedfont worked hard and arguably deserved their chance."

But the Park boss said that Saturday was probably one of the worst experiences he has had as a manager in terms of the officiating.

He said the game was described by a member of his coaching set-up as "a throwback to the 1970s" with a dozen yellow cards dished out and Park's Michael Smith seeing red for violent conduct after an incident in front of the Camberley bench that saw him allegedly tread on an opponent.

The dismissal will now rule him out of four games next month and McElligott said Smith had admitted making contact with the Camberley player, but said it was accidental.

However, the Park boss said his players' frustrations in the game stemmed from the referee's failure to take control of affairs.

He said: "Camberley's tactics were overly aggressive and some of our players were upset that they weren't getting the protection they felt they deserved.

"I'm not saying my players are whiter than white, but I was disappointed they did not get the level of protection they perhaps should."

McElligott added his side would have to move on quickly from the disappointment though, with trips to face Croydon and Colliers Wood United up next for Park.
