VISITORS to one of Surrey's premier beauty spots can now sit back and enjoy panoramic views in comfort thanks to the newfound woodworking skills of some local volunteers.
Nine new benches were installed at Leith Hill Tower this week following a six-month project carried out by National Trust volunteers.
Each bench was paid for by public donation and made from oak taken from Bookham Common following management work to thin out woodland.
National Trust ranger Ruby Cole told the Advertiser: "Visitors had told us they wanted more benches up here so we put up posters to see if anyone wanted to donate money for one as a celebration or memorial. We got lots of people who were very interested in the project."
Volunteers Tony Russell, Kiaran Wood and Steve Twiggs made and assembled the seats at a National Trust workshop on Leith Hill after being tutored in joinery by fellow volunteer Mike Murray.
Steve Lipscombe, Joanna Pitty, Rob Dryborough-Smith, John Gall, Dave Rankin and Rosemary Caffyn also took part in the project.
Miss Cole said all had enjoyed the experience of either learning a new skill or refreshing a dimly remembered one from their childhood.
Mr Rankin, 62, said he had made his bench – using traditional dowel, mortise and tenon fixings – as an unusual wedding present for his son Alex.
He said: "I hadn't even picked up a saw in 50 years so it was all new to me, but Mike Murray was a great teacher and it was a very rewarding experience.
"It's great to be able to give something back to the countryside and also to do something for the rangers who put in such a lot of effort on Leith Hill."
Most of the benches feature the maker's mark and an inscription beneath the seat in order to ensure longevity and keep a simple, uncluttered look.
Miss Cole added: "We put the first ones in on Tuesday and the weather was perfect for it. There were loads of people up there telling us how lovely they looked.
"The project has been very satisfying as they are sturdy benches made of oak which should last for decades."
The National Trust plans to make more benches for Leith Hill. Anyone interested in paying £200 to dedicate one can call Miss Cole on 01306 712711 or e-mail ruby.cole@nationaltrust.org.uk
