Ryman League Division One South
Chipstead 1
Faversham Town 2
CHIPSTEAD manager John Hamsher said that his players need to take a "look at themselves" after they were well beaten at home by Faversham on Saturday.
The scoreline suggests it was a close match, but it was anything but as the visitors, who moved proudly up to second in the Ryman League Division One South standings, were dominant from start to finish.
Chipstead created little and were it not for a 26th minute penalty, converted by Dwayne Antonio, there would be nothing to talk about from their point of view.
Hamsher said: "When you have one shot in the whole game how can you expect to win games? You're not, it's as simple as that. Some of those boys have got to take a look at themselves and turn up and prepare themselves for a football game properly because that wasn't good enough."
The hosts had twice got lucky before they took a surprise lead.
In the first minute goalkeeper Martin Grant hit a clearance straight at Luke Harvey. The ball rebounded back to him, but he then proceeded to kick thin air allowing Danny Hockton the ball, but the striker could not beat Grant who spread himself well to spare his own blushes.
Then in the 21st minute captain Dan Dean was adjudged to have pulled at Harvey's shirt in the area and a penalty was awarded. Wayne Wilson stepped up, but Grant made a fine save low to his left.
Chipstead then got a penalty of their own when Town keeper Simon Overland brought down Antonio and the forward picked himself up and rammed the spot-kick straight down the middle.
If that was the initiative the Chips needed to get going, they did not grasp it and right on half-time Faversham deservedly drew level when Wilson sent a free-kick into the box from deep, Hockton flicked on and Grant was in no man's land, leaving David Botterill the easiest of tasks of tapping home.
There was still time in the half for Harvey to have a shot tipped over the top by Grant.
In the second period the Faversham dominance continued.
Barely a minute had passed yet again when Grant was called up to block at the feet of Hockton.
Ten minutes later the turnaround was complete when Botterill doubled his and his side's tally, headed in at the back post from Aaron Lacy's cross.
Tom Jelley compounded a miserable afternoon for the home side when he was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Jamie Maxted and there were some unsavoury scenes that followed immediately afterwards that only made things worse for an already despondent Chipstead outfit.
