MOTORISTS were left stranded for hours on the A23 and M23 last night as the icy conditions took hold throughout the county.
Between Crawley and Brighton, drivers found themselves caught in 15 mile tailbacks as the snow and ice brought the major roads to a standstill.
Fire crews from Godstone and Reigate were kept busy throughout the night with both stations reporting a number of calls outs for minor collisions.
Traffic is now moving on both roads but hazardous driving conditions remain on the M23 between junction 9, M23 (Gatwick Airport) and junction 11, A23 because of ice and snow.
A severe weather warning remains in place for the whole of the South East.
