Sainsbury's Redhill supermarket gets planning approval for third time

A THIRD planning application for the redevelopment of Sainsbury's in London Road, Redhill, has been approved by the borough council.

The latest application, which comes just weeks after another one was approved, includes plans for a smaller, 70 room, hotel to be part of the redevelopment.

By approving this latest application it means there are now approved plans for Sainsbury's to develop their store in the town centre with either a larger, 98 room hotel, a development with a smaller hotel, and a third with no hotel at all.

According to Sainsbury's and Reigate and Banstead borough council, the plan remains to develop the shop with a hotel, but after preferred provider Travelodge announced they may not be able to meet their commitment to the project following a financial review, they needed a back-up plan to begin development.

And there was controversy surrounding the previous application, without the hotel, when councilors looked set to reject the plans, before deferring them, and then supporting them at the following planning meeting in February.

The council is now waiting for the Sainsbury's, and partners Aviva, to move ahead with their plans for the town, although at this stage it is unclear which plan will move forward.
