Accident fears over missing one-way sign outside Reigate train station

INADEQUATE signage could cause an accident outside Reigate Train Station, according to traders.

Cars are not allowed to turn into Holmesdale Road – which is home to both the station and a parade of shops – from busy Reigate Hill as that end of the road is one-way.

But last year the lamppost with the one-way sign was removed and replaced without a sign.

Now fading signs on Reigate Hill mean cars are unwittingly turning into the street and driving the wrong-way down the one-way section.

Police say they are powerless and cannot punish drivers due to the poor signage, but shop owners fear the situation is an "accident waiting to happen".

Alan Perry, from hair salon Sans Souci, said: "Someone is either going to get knocked over and killed or there's going to be an accident.

"It is getting stupid now, the planning around these signs has been a joke."

Making the situation worse are motorists who are driving along Holmesdale Road, parking outside the shops and then turning round and driving the wrong way back down the road to avoid turning out of the busy junction with Reigate Hill.

Mr Perry says motorists driving the wrong way can often not be seen by those trying to pull out of parking spaces.

"Someone is going to have an accident," he told the Mirror.

"They are going to drive into someone; sometimes people go up on the kerb to avoid other cars.

"We get a lot of schoolchildren here."

A number of traders have written to Surrey County Council asking for a new one-way system sign and new signs on the hill to stop people turning into the road. But so far they have heard nothing back.

Colin Penfold, from English Rose Properties, said: "It has become quite dangerous because cars are turning into the road from the hill and people aren't aware of it or expecting it."

Surrey County Council is currently holding a public consultation on its road sign policy. The website says: "The council recognises the importance of accurate, appropriate signing for safe navigation to a range of destinations, but also the distraction and clutter that can result from too many signs.

"Greater emphasis will be given to replacing road signs that, if missing, prevent law enforcement, for example, speed limit signs."
