Dorking, Ashtead, Leatherhead and Epsom commuters were delayed this morning (Wednesday) when a well-used London-bound train was cancelled at short notice at the height of the rush hour.
Frustrated passengers were ordered to leave the 0732 Dorking to London Waterloo service when the doors were found to have developed a fault.
Customers were also left waiting fruitlessly at Boxhill and Westhumble, Leatherhead and Ashtead.
South West Trains' official Twitter account @SW_Trains announced the cancellation at 7.44am, prompting angry responses from passengers.
The company explained: "We are not able to run trains with people on them when we have a fault with a door.
"The door is then isolated and the train run empty to the nearest place to be repaired."
But Twitter user Martin Capel argued: "The carriage should be isolated and the service run with that carriage empty. Simple."
South West responded: "None of the doors will be safe to use on the entire train due to the problem with the interlock. So not able to do that.
"Might be something that could be built into future train stock. Just not able to be done at this current time."
