A fire broke out in a kitchen at a house in Edenside Road, Bookham, at about 2.45pm yesterday (Thursday)after a chip pan overheated.
Firefighters from Leatherhead and Epsom wore breathing apparatus and a fire blanket to extinguish the blaze.
One Leatherhead firefighter said: "The male occupant threw water over the chip pan which is what you shouldn't do.
"He got out of the kitchen safely but it could have been a lot worse."
