SNOW has hit parts of East Surrey as the wintry weather continues. Residents have woken up to the white stuff ahead of forecast, with it already settling across many parts of the county including Redhill, Reigate and Oxted. The snow has been falling quite thickly in parts of East Surrey since 6.30am. By 7am it began to settle as the temperature fell to 0.5C in Reigate. It's been mainly settling on side roads but sweeping down on other routes causing hazardous driving conditions, especially on the North Downs near Warlingham, Banstead and Headley. Further warnings have been issued for snow, sleet and rain across the weekend. The Met Office says there is a "continued risk of significant disruption" from snow today and tomorrow, mainly covering central parts of the UK. But Surrey won't escape the slow-moving band of rain, sleet and snow sweeping across the country. It said further significant snowfall was likely to accumulate on hills, with continued drifting and blizzard conditions in strong south-easterly winds. At lower levels, some areas could see a further 5 to 10cm (2in to 4in) of snow, though exact locations remain "very uncertain at this stage", it said. People have expressed their surprise at waking up to snow in Surrey. On Twitter janburnell wrote: "Snow! I have to get to Redhill to sing #Mozart's requiem in the Surrey Festival. Weather is against me in a very personal way.#paranoia" And browning_alison tweeted: "Didn't expect to wake up to snow in Redhill. Hope I can still get to @VarndeanSchool for Oliver tonight!" Bad weather has brought chaos across other parts of the UK. On Friday, a body was found after a landslip under a house in Cornwall, and about 70 motorists were rescued after becoming stuck in snow drifts in Cumbria late on Friday. This winter weather in spring is caused by persistent easterly winds from frozen continental Europe, which have chilled the North Sea to 4C or 5C. The average temperature is currently around 3C – it is normally nearer 6C at this time of year. The coldest March on record was in 1962 with a mean temperature of 1.9C, which will not be beaten this year. Forecasters say the cold could hang on until the bitter end of March however.
