THE unseasonal snowfall to hit Surrey has led to the cancellation of the 75th Sunbeam pioneer motorcycle run, which was due to take place tomorrow (Sunday, March 24). An inspection of the site of the start of the run, at Epsom Downs this morning was carried out by organisers who reported that they could barely see more than a few yards in the driving snow. It was decided with reluctance that the conditions would be too adverse for the 400 old motorbikes, many a century old, to participate.
One caravan containing bikes had arrived from Berlin this morning. Those with the van were given the sad news and will have to return home as the event cannot be rescheduled at short notice.
It is only the second time in the history of the run that it has had to be cancelled. The other time was due to the foot and mouth disease.
