The recent commencement of the Bicycle Recycling Project at 10 Portland Drive has been greeted locally as a really positive scheme, the main aim of the initiative being to refurbish second hand bikes, for sale, incorporating in-house bike maintenance, and cycle training, in an effort to provide residents with the opportunity to get mobile, and in the process, improve fitness. Many of the bikes are kindly donated to the project by Surrey Police.
However, now it seems that the "recycling" mantle has taken on a different guise, with the discovery of a "stolen item" amongst the shop stock. A local youth on seeing a fairly distinctive BMX bike in the shop felt sure that it belonged to his friend, who had recently had it stolen. Apparantly, the bike, with unique autographs on the handlebars obtained at a BMX rally, had together with another bike, been taken from a back garden in Reigate. Since, the owner has called to identify, and reclaim, the bike, believed to be worth in the region of £800.
