DEVELOPERS "dedicated" to the history of Bletchingley revealed possible plans for a new four-house development in the village.

Controversy surrounds building on the site behind The Whyte Harte Hotel, off Outwood Lane, after two previous planning applications were refused.

But at a public meeting on Monday, developers Bacchus Partners showed residents the plans to build four three-bedroom homes, with 11 car parking spaces.

Will Kitchener, from the developers, said: "We understand that the site and village has a lot of history and we are dedicated to that.

"In the last few days we have been speaking to neighbours and we must maintain that this is in the very early stages."

They aim for the homes to be on a "burgage plot" to stick to the history of the village – these are houses built on a long and narrow plot of land, with narrow street-fronts.

Richard Scutt, in charge of development for the company, said: "I think this is the grain of what Bletchingley is about."

The access road to the site will come out onto Outwood Lane, which currently has a retaining wall, which the developers have said they own.

Mr Scutt added the new access road would be 4.1m wide.

He added: "The whole development and the access road needs to take neighbours into account."

At the meeting, residents voiced their concerns over an ancient yew tree that stands in the middle of the proposed development.

The developers got permission from Tandridge District Council to fell sycamore trees in February, but have maintained they will keep the old tree.

Mr Scutt added: "We are looking to maintain this tree and it will be in the centre of a green area at the front of the homes."

The developers bought the land, which is in a conservation area, in November last year. They revealed the homes are likely to be sold for around £425,000 each, similar to the new homes in Ann's Walk.

The London-based company hopes to submit a planning application to Tandridge District Council by May. They also hope to have the homes completed by the end of the year.

A public consultation will now be held on Monday, April 22 at Bletchingley Village Hall from 1 to 8pm.
