Firefighters were called to a small chimney fire in Oakhill Close in Ashtead on Tuesday night.
The crew from Leatherhead fire station was at the scene dealing with the blaze from 8.50 to 11.30pm.
They originally attempted to put it out using special chimney rods attached to a water pump.
But they were then forced to use two ladders to reach the chimney from the ground and extinguish the flames.
No one was hurt in the blaze. Crew manager Martin Stebbings said: "You should make sure to sweep your chimney at least once or twice a year."
