EAST Surrey MP Sam Gyimah has backed the gay marriage bill.

He was one of the 366 MPs who supported the bill in a vote on Tuesday, which saw it pass through the House of Commons.

But the proposal has caused controversy, with many Tory MPs refusing to support it.

Despite supporting the bill, Mr Gymiah says he understands the problems it is causing.

"There have been understandable concerns around providing safeguards for teachers, chaplains and employees of a religious persuasion," he said. "So while equal marriage is a landmark piece of social legislation the last thing we would want to do is to infringe on religious liberty.

"That is why I have welcomed the detailed concessions made by the Government this week."

The House of Lords will review the bill, which Prime Minister David Cameron hopes will be law by next summer.

It would allow same-sex couples, who can currently have civil ceremonies, to marry.

Religious groups would have the choice to "opt in" if they so wished.

Speaking earlier this year, Mr Gyimah said: "It is right that today, same-sex couples are entitled to the same legal protections and freedom from discrimination as opposite-sex couples."

Reigate MP Crispin Blunt also voted in favour of the bill, while Mole Valley MP Sir Paul Beresford objected.
