THE NEW Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Colin Taylor, has been appointed, following the Council's annual Mayor Making ceremony at the Town Hall on May 21.
Speaking at his first engagement,for Noise Action Week, Councillor Taylor said: "It is truly an honour to be chosen as the first citizen of Epsom & Ewell in what is going to be another eventful year.
"We've got Tour of Britain coming to Epsom in September and we must not forget this year also marks the centenary of the death of Suffragette Emily Davison who sacrificed herself within the Borough for women's rights"
Colin has lived in the Borough for 43 years and has been a Borough Councillor since 1999 and a County Councillor since 2001 where his main role has been on the Health Scrutiny Committee.
In that time, he has served on most of the Council's committees, including the Planning, Planning Policy and the Standards Committees.
He also chaired the Epsom & Ewell Local Committee from 2009 to 2010.
The Mayor added: "Though Epsom & Ewell is the smallest borough in Surrey, it is second to none and lives up to its motto of 'None Such'"My wife and I are looking forward to visiting its many organisations on your behalf."
Councillor Taylor's wife Jose will be Mayoress for the year and Councillor Robert Foote will support him as Deputy Mayor with his wife Rosemary as Deputy Mayoress.
Colin supports a number of causes. He is a trustee of the Surrey Historic Buildings Trust and is a member of Amnesty International, the Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Consumers' Association, the Epsom Common Association and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
As is customary, Councillor Taylor has nominated three charities to support during his mayoral year.
.Sunnybank Trust, local to the Borough is included as a Mayor's charity for the first time.
The Trust helps vulnerable men, women and young people with learning disabilities in Epsom and the surrounding areas to lead fuller lives.
The Mayor has also nominated MERU, an Epsom-based charity that designs and provides bespoke equipment for children and young people with disabilities.
Councillor Taylor will also support Epsom Phab, a charity for disabled and able-bodied children, currently based in the Linton's Youth Centre, Epsom.
As Mayor for the year 2013/14, Councillor Taylor will have a full diary from day one with a number of civic events planned throughout the year,including visits to schools, residents, community and sports groups as well as representing the Borough at the Epsom Derby.
