A BID by residents to shape future development in Ashtead is being considered by Mole Valley District Council.
Ashtead Community Vision (ACV) has applied to be "designated" a formal neighbourhood forum, after which they will be authorised to go about drafting a Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP).
If approved, the NDP will outline where, how much and what type of development will take place in the village over the next 10 to 15 years.
Before taking a decision, the council is inviting views on the boundary of the area and the composition of the forum until June 19.
Councillor John Northcott, portfolio holder for planning, said: "This is an exciting initiative by Ashtead residents who have grasped the opportunity of influencing the type of development needed to help support the future of their community and shape the place where they live or work.
"The council has been supporting the development of the forum since the interest in preparing a plan for Ashtead was first conceived and I am looking forward to seeing the results of the public consultation."
ACV has spent the last year collecting evidence needed to form the basis of the NDP, in addition to raising awareness and recruiting volunteers.
The group received more than 600 responses to an online survey collecting residents' views on what the plan should include.
Other villages looking to create an NDP include Effingham, Bookham, Ockley, and Westcott.
Effingham Parish Council has already had its proposal for the village to be designated a neighbourhood planning area accepted by Guildford Borough Council, and is now in the process of drafting its NDP.
Once completed, the NDP will be reviewed by a planning inspector and will thereafter be considered in conjunction with new planning applications in the area, much like a local plan.
The initiative is part of the Government's localism scheme to give people control over development in their community, with residents' views sought on what is included in the plan.
