BUDDING bakers put their skills to the test at a school's May Fair.
In a nod to the hit BBC programme, The Great West Ashtead Bake-Off was held at the Taleworth Road primary school on May 12, and competition was fierce amongst the pupils.
The under-11s category challenged participants to concoct the best chocolate chip cookies while those aged over 11 made brownies.
Sue Noble, of the Surrey Hills Cookery School, and Gill Daniels, of The Meadow Kitchen, in Ashtead, judged the competition.
Parent Tracie Fanthorpe organised the fair and said she chose to hold the Bake-Off in the hope of inspiring children to spend more time in the kitchen.
"I'm really keen to make children grow their own food and learn a bit more about cooking," she said.
"I'm also in charge of the garden at West Ashtead and we're planning to give a percentage of the funds raised by the fair towards some new equipment.
"I'm trying to encourage the children to grow vegetables and other things in the garden, so that's the reason why I am so keen to get an allotment here."
Year 2 pupil Oscar Taylor won the under-11s category and Sophie D'Souza won the over-11s competition.
The total amount raised by the May Fair has not yet been confirmed but is expected to be more than £5,000.
Other traditional attractions at the fun day included maypole dancing, a tug of war and a coconut shy.
"I'm told it's the best May Fair the school has had," said Mrs Fanthorpe.
"It was brilliant. A really, really good day."
