LINGFIELD may have had a record turnout for its Remembrance Day service.

An estimated 1,000 people remembered fallen heroes on Sunday, when Lingfield High Street was closed for residents and councillors to gather with past and present servicemen around the war memorial.

Poppy Appeal organiser Deborah Major said: "I think we had the largest number of people ever attend this year. It was absolutely fantastic to see so many people pay their respects.

"There were a lot of stories being told and shared between the older and younger generations.

"It was an incredibly touching service and to see so many people there was amazing."

The Reverend Michael Carter conducted a service at St Peter's and St Paul's Church, before the Remembrance Service at the memorial.

Wreaths were laid by Guides, Scouts and veterans.

In Blindley Heath, dozens of people joined a parade from Cottenhams to St John's Meadow, to pay respects to the war dead.

In Dormansland, a special service was held at St John's Church.
