A LORRY rolled on to its side while crossing a roundabout, causing hours of traffic chaos.
The truck was carrying building supplies, travelling north on the A24, when it tipped over at the North Holmwood roundabout.
Heavy lifting equipment was needed to right it, and road closures and restrictions were in place for almost 12 hours, while police and highways officers cleared debris and oil from the road.
Stephen Eades, who lives near the roundabout off Spook Hill, said: "When it went over, the whole house shook.
"I heard a crash and had a look out and said 'yet again; another lorry'.
"We've been here since 1995 and that's the fourth on that side of the roundabout that we can remember.
"I ran over because I am a St John Ambulance first aider. The driver was a little Polish chap. He was a bit shocked but didn't look injured, he was just worried saying 'I've lost my job'."
He added: "This time, the load was secure enough not to rip out the barrier protecting the subway under the roundabout.
"That's why I rushed over, it was to make sure nothing had gone down and hit someone in the subway.
"And thank heavens there were no cyclists going round the roundabout at the same time."
The lorry tipped at about 11.45am on November 7, causing heavy traffic for several hours, stretching up Flint Hill to Horsham Road, and to the one-way system through Dorking.
The speed limit on the A24 was reduced from 60mph to 50mph this summer, though there's a national restriction of 50mph for heavy goods vehicles on dual carriageways anyway.
Police are not prosecuting the lorry driver following the incident.
