AN EVER-PRESENT hat and pair of wellies is the secret of success for a school which is celebrating staying at the top of the class.

Limpsfield Grange Church of England Infant School is revelling in getting its second successive "outstanding" grade from school inspectors Ofsted.

And head teacher Jenny Baird says the focus on getting children outside as much as possible is at the heart of the school's achievements.

"The children have to have a pair of wellies and a hat at school at all times," she told the Mirror.

"We take them outside whenever we can. We are so lucky to have the common next to us.

"Getting outside gives the children hands-on experience when learning and they are talking and learning about what they are seeing. By the time they put pen to paper they have expanded their vocabulary by looking and talking about things."

The school on Westerham Road, Oxted, caters for 174 pupils aged four to seven.

In his report, inspector Rob Crompton praised the "love of learning" pupils have and described their behaviour as "exemplary".

He said: "The school is so successful that it has supported schools within the local authority."

The school held a special celebration of their continued "outstanding" status on Friday, with a sports day and picnic, with individual cupcakes for each student.
