AROUND 2,000 people poured into St Nicholas' School for the first Merstham fireworks display in a decade.

The Taynton Drive school played host to a fairground and firework display on Saturday, as organisers sought to re-ignite the community spirit in the town.

"We wanted to give the community an event," said organiser Di Duley.

"It was fantastic. We invested a lot of money and time in the event because it is the first year and we want next year to be even better.

"The atmosphere was amazing; to see groups and families coming in was just what we wanted."

The event did not raise any money but the idea was to kindle community spirit.

Revellers took to the event's dedicated Facebook page to offer their thoughts on the night.

Alan Rogers said: "My wife, son and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event. It wasn't just a fireworks display. This was the first event of its kind in Merstham and I'm proud to have lived here for the past eight years. I hope that next year's event is even better."

Another, Simon Berry, added: "Great event, kids enjoyed the rides, good having the old-style stalls there too, fireworks were very good."

Mrs Duley thanked Taylors of Merstham, which provided wood for the bonfire and fluorescent jackets for marshals.
