NOT content with swimming the English Channel or cycling the length of the country, Banstead-born comic David Walliams has now become a record-breaking author. The former Reigate Grammar School pupil's fourth book, Gangsta Granny, has today smashed a record set by one Harry Potter, spending 17 weeks as the country's best-selling children's book. It's another triumph for the star who became one of the nation's favourite funny men in Little Britain before going on to raise millions of pounds for charity and joining the pundit panel on TV hit Britain's Got Talent. He became a dad earlier this year. Gangsta Granny is an adventure yarn about Ben, an 11-year-old boy who discovers his granny is a jewel thief, after years of thinking she was just a boring old person. Speaking last year before the book was published, Walliams said: "As a child you can get into the thinking that old people are boring, forgetting that they've probably lived amazing lives. "My own grandparents had extraordinary stories. "My grandad shot down a plane during the Second World War, but I was a bit too young to understand it. "It's only when you get older you become more interested." In the story, Ben is dumped every Friday night with his granny, while his mother pursues her love of Strictly Stars Dancing – a take on Strictly Come Dancing. The adventure follows the unlikely pair as they embark on a mission to steal the Crown Jewels.
