MOLE Valley District Council has expressed concerns over the new plans for a second runway at Gatwick Airport.
Yesterday, Gatwick unveiled plans for a new runway to the south of the existing airport which could create 19,000 jobs and boost the local economy by £56 billion over the next 40 years.
But the plans also put 100 homes under threat and could expose 11,800 people to serious noise pollution with planes taking off and arriving over villages including Dorking and Betchworth.
This morning the council said the obvious economic benefits must be weighed against the potential effect of local business and residents.
Cllr John Northcott, portfolio holder for planning, said: "Mole Valley District Council recognises that any expansion of Gatwick Airport could impact adversely not only on local residents and businesses, but also on those who live or work further afield.
"Therefore the Council needs to carefully consider the issues for and against the airport's proposal later this year, bearing in mind such impacts and any proposed mitigation."
A statement released by the council said: "The council welcomes the fact that a second runway could stimulate investment and support the economy of the region. However, it is also concerned that such development raises significant issues in relation to access to the airport, housing, noise and the environment. These matters are complex and require careful consideration."
