No prosecution looming over eyesore

TO the disgust of some, no further prosecution is imminent against the owner of Caterham's most notorious eyesore.

Critics say the dilapidated former Rose and Young building, in Croydon Road, has been a blot on the town's landscape for about 20 years.

In May its owner Caterham Properties Ltd was fined £1,000 by Redhill magistrates for not tidying up the building, as ordered by Tandridge District Council.

Since then some minor improvements have been made to the facade, with new boarding put up and the surface painted black. But weeds are still growing out of its damaged roof, graffiti is starting to reappear and the flagpole is rusty.

Caterham Valley county councillor Mark Jones said: "The only 'makeover' I want to see is that building's demolition. Until it has gone I won't be satisfied."

But the council's planning committee decided on July 25 not to mount a further prosecution.

A council spokeswoman said: "The notice served by the council to tidy up the building remains in effect, so it is possible for the council to authorise action in the enforcement of the notice at any time in the future."

A working group will report to the Planning Policy Committee prior to a further discussion on September 12.
