Cornwell sets Eagles' sights

A TOP quarter finish is the target for Effingham & Leatherhead this season, according to director of rugby Dom Cornwell.

The Eagles enjoyed a good season last year in London Two South West, finishing in the top half having taken the scalps of some of the top sides, including beating Portsmouth home and away.

And Cornwell says that the aim has to be to progress further up the table this time around.

He said: "We want to build on the success we had last season.

"It was a good year for us after a few scrambling around near the bottom of the division.

"We are looking forward to trying to build on that this year and we have attracted a few new players. We have lost a couple, but things have been progressing nicely and it will be good to get going."

However, Cornwell is predicting a tough division again this year, with Trojans and Gosport & Fareham coming down from London One South and several other sides looking to push on this campaign.

He said: "I think Guildford will be strong this season.

"They are looking to get promotion, but it is difficult to gauge the sides coming down and those coming up.

"We know there are some tough sides in there like Portsmouth and Tottonians, but it will be quite interesting."

The Eagles start the season away at Old Alleynians on Saturday, before hosting Guildford the following week.
