UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen in areas of Surrey for the last six months and has dropped by hundreds of claimants in the last year. The Office for National Statistics releases monthly figures for the number of people claiming Jobseekers' Allowance. In August, the latest available statistics, 1,302 people in Reigate and Banstead claimed the benefit and this figure has been calculated to represent 1.5 per cent of the working age population from 16 to 64. For the same month 571, 1.1 per cent of the working age population, individuals living in the Mole Valley claimed. Since February figures have decreased each month in Reigate and Banstead from 1,606 and 682 in Mole Valley. In past 12 months the number of claimants has fallen by 358 and 116 respectively. When comparing August with the same month last year the jobless statistic has dropped by 332 in Reigate and Banstead and 147 in Mole Valley. Surrey is performing well compared to neighbouring areas. During August Crawley had 1,626 claimants, working age proportion of 2.3 per cent. The figures are not an official measure of unemployment, as they only show people who are claiming Jobseekers' allowance.
