Back-to-back defeats 'just a hiccup' for South Park, says McElligott

SOUTH PARK boss Joe McElligott says he is expecting a response from his players this weekend after they lost two games in a week.

Park were left shell-shocked on Saturday after being hit for six at home by Cove in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, before losing out 4-3 at Ash United on Tuesday night in the Southern Combination Cup.

And McElligott said he hopes it is just a hiccup for his side after a largely positive start to the new season.

"If it can happen to Manchester United, it can happen to anyone," he said.

"We just have to accept what has happened, take it on the chin and move on. We have had a good start to the season, but we have now had a little hiccup.

"Every side has it at some point, but I expect a response from the players on Saturday."

McElligott said his players were punished for a few "fundamental errors" on Saturday, as Cove raced into a 5-0 lead at half time.

The visitors to Whitehall Lane then made it six in the second half, before Chris Smith scored a consolation for Park to make it 6-1 late on.

There was, however, still time for JJ O'Sullivan to be given his marching orders in the closing stages, completing a miserable afternoon for Park.

On Tuesday, McElligott said Park gave opportunities to a few players who have not been playing much recently, but he said it was a similar story with Park conceding a few poor goals as they lost 4-3.

And he said that is something they will have to improve on when they travel to face Badshot Lea on Saturday, looking to return to the form that has taken them to third in the Combined Counties League Premier Division after eight games.
