THE African school supported by last year's Advertiser for Africa appeal has been visited by members of Dorking United Reformed Church.

Twelve members of the church ventured into this remote part of Uganda to spend two weeks teaching at this primary school.

The United Reformed Church has supported the BMK School in the Luuka District of south east Uganda for the past eight years and last year was pleased to be part of the Advertiser's joint venture with the East African Playgrounds charity to construct playground equipment at the school.

The school provides an education for the 900 village children aged between seven and 14.

The school has no mains electricity or drainage and very basic toilets. Many classes take place outdoors in the school grounds as there are insufficient classrooms.

The team from the church spent their time teaching on a nearby sports field, where science, English and art classes took place.

A highlight of the visit was to give out 100 knitted teddies to all the nursery children. These were provided by Ruth Palmer and her group of knitters from Capel.

Ted and Jane Bellingham who lead the project were delighted with the visit.

Mr Bellingham said: "This is the second time we have been with a party to the school. The environment is completely different to anything you would find in the UK yet everyone coped well in the conditions. The pupils and staff really appreciate our visits and we in turn gain so much for being there with such keen and eager pupils."

If you would like to learn more about the school contact Ted or Jane Bellingham on 01306 889501 or visit the website www.wellfare.org.uk

Presentations to groups and clubs can be arranged, said Mr Bellingham.
