THE level crossing in Ashtead is currently broken, meaning no traffic can pass though.
The Woodfield Lane crossing has been stuck down since 12.30pm, causing queues in both directions between Woodfield Road and St Stephens Avenue.
Network Rail apologised for the inconvenience but could not provide an estimate for when the barrier would be open again.
Spokesperson Jon Crampton said: "The barrier failed at 12.30. We had engineers on the site by 12.50.
"There is currently a fault with the barrier. If the barrier has failed we have to run the trains through so the barriers have to be kept down.
"We have alerted Surrey Police to what's happened.
"I cannot give you an estimation as to when this will be fixed.
"We can assure everyone that there are engineers working to resolve the problem and we apologise for any inconvenience this is causing to local people."
