Council workers repair one pothole on "minefield" road and leave dozens of others untouched

A "MINEFIELD" road littered with potholes remains a hazard to residents, despite a council repair team spending an hour there last week.

The pothole repair team, dispatched by Surrey County Council, arrived in Stockton Road, South Park, last Wednesday and spent an hour repairing one of the divots in the road.

But residents were left aghast when the workmen then departed the site, leaving countless bigger holes just metres away.

Their anger was compounded by the fact that main roads in Reigate town centre – less than two miles away – are being completely resurfaced at the same time.

Resident Mick France said: "It is like a minefield along here and they only did the one hole.

"The lorry was parked outside my house for about an hour and they repaired one pothole and left all the rest. I went out and spoke to them but they said they could only do the one.

"They are doing the whole of Reigate at the moment, but the council doesn't do the little side roads."

He added: "The potholes they fixed last year are already back; they come here and fill them in but that just breaks up and the holes come back.

"They are treating us like second-class citizens in the little side roads and not fixing [the problem]."

Mr France said he and his neighbours have complained about the pockmarked roads in South Park in the past, but the issue has never been satisfactorily resolved.

Surrey County Council's multi-million-pound road resurfacing scheme, Project Horizon, aimed to completely re-lay miles of the county's most affected roads with a pothole-proof surface.

But the project was briefly put on hold earlier this year after funds were diverted to help repair damage caused by the floods.

In January and February, council officers say they fixed 18,500 potholes and they are still working to repair damage caused by the bad weather.

Once potholes are reported, they are assessed for severity, and repair work is then scheduled as appropriate.

Surrey County Council was unable to respond to specific queries about Stockton Road before the Mirror went to press.
