Banstead first XI's Ryman Surrey Championship Premier Division season started in damp conditions with a loss to Sunbury. Put in to bat, Banstead lost their first two wickets for 16 runs before the innings was steadied by Billie Yeats (22) and a solid contribution of 38 from overseas star Uwe Birkenstock. Banstead mustered only 136 runs off 42 overs, with the pick of Sunbury's bowlers being Kevin Smith with nine overs 4-33. Banstead were unable to make a dent in Sunbury's batting, losing when the rain returned on Duckworth Lewis with Sunbury at 100-1 after 21 overs. The second XI got off to a promising start against Sunbury reaching 146-6 after 45 overs before the match was abandoned, but the third XI also playing Sunbury suffered a very disappointing loss by five wickets after being bowled out for 55. Banstead's fourth XI managed a winning draw against Beddington in another rain affected game, with Ian Estall scoring 66 not out of Banstead's 142-5. Beddington reached 65-2 in 21 overs in return. Both Sunday teams were in action in friendly matches with the second XI beating West End by 79 runs with 77 from Birkenstock and 57 from Mo Vakharia, and the third XI winning against Ashtead by six wickets with Steve Montebello scoring 80 not out. The club's extensive colts' league programme is well under way, with wins this week for the U14s against Old Rutlishians, U13B and U11s against Worcester Park, and the U15s losing to Chessington.
