ENERGETIC pupils at one of the area's largest schools are striding out to raise funds.

About half the students at 2,000-place Oxted School will be taking part in a sponsored walk on May 24.

And this follows hot on the heels of the school's amazing RAG (Raising and Giving) Week success last month.

The sponsored walk will aim to raise £10,000-plus towards a new covered seating area at the school in Bluehouse Lane.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will set off on five different walks locally of about ten miles each.

Areas walked will include Woldingham, Limpsfield Chart and the Titsey Estate.

Last year's walk raised £9,313 which went towards a new minibus used by students for away game sports fixtures and trips. More than 100 staff and about 1,300 students took part.

The school's RAG Week raised a bumper £3,100. The proceeds will be split between the Orpheus Centre in Godstone – which provides performing arts for young disabled adults – and the Kent-based Hospice in the Weald.

In addition Barclays Bank in Oxted donated £1,000 through the school for the Orpheus Centre.

Money-raising events during the week included a girls' rugby match, pupils enduring baths of baked beans, staff versus sixth formers hockey and football matches, as well as a quiz night and a band night.

At an assembly today (Thursday) cheques will be presented to representatives from the charities.
