FISH and chips is a staple of the British takeaway scene. Now fans of the seaside – and suburban – favourite can indulge their passion for just 99p – and it is all thanks to Norway. The Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) has teamed up with local chip shop, Deep Blue, to give 99p portions of cod and chips to visitors in Redhill to celebrate Norway Day on Saturday. 17th May A total of 16 tonnes of cod has been given to 99 shops – including Deep Blue on Linkfield Corner – to mark the day. David Long, from Deep Blue, said: "We are so pleased to be taking part in this annual celebration. I know that our customers will enjoy the delicious Norwegian cod and chips on offer – and they will certainly enjoy the prices too!" The 99p fish and chips are being served in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the Norwegian constitution. Norwegian cod is a popular choice for British chippies due to its firm flesh and flaky texture, its light, delicate flavour, versatility and good quality. Sustainable fishing in the country means the vast majority of cod sold by fish and chip shops in the UK is caught in the icy, clear Arctic waters of the Barents Sea off the northern Norwegian coast. Jack-Robert Møller, UK Director for the NSC, said: "Norway has provided UK fish and chips shops with delicious cod from the icy Barents Sea for nearly 70 years now. "We are so pleased that due to the abundance of sustainable cod in Norway, that we are able to give the gift of this fish to the people of Redhill in celebration of our historic Norway Day."
