BANSTEAD Community Junior School have been crowned the Surrey School Games Hi-5 netball champions.

More than 300 schools from across Surrey took part in the competition, playing in qualifying tournaments leading up to 12 schools taking part in the final, held on Wednesday last week in Guildford.

The final match was between BCJS and Southfield Park School to win the coveted trophy.

The P&G Surrey School Games is part of the national Sainsbury's School Games programme and part of Surrey's Olympic legacy.

The BCJS team were: Molly Barnett, captain, Alfie Thompson, vice captain, Rose Hammond, Josh Barnett, Hannah Robson, Will Johnson and Amy Stainbank.

Netball coach Tracey Thompson said: "The competition was tough with strong umpiring but the children played exceptionally well, all of them scoring at least two goals. They defended superbly and were very disciplined with their footwork and passing. The team scored 37 goals in all, with 11 scored against them.

"The final tournament was 70 minutes of very competitive netball – fitness, work ethic and team spirit was exceptional, and I was extremely proud of the sportsmanship the children displayed with losing teams."
