THOUSANDS of pounds worth of cigarettes were stolen after a lorry was raided in Redhill.
Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft of £25,000 worth of cigarettes on Saturday (May 17).
At around 10.30am, a Co-op delivery driver stopped at the junction of Marketfield Road, Cromwell Road and the High Street to ask for directions.
It is at this point a driver of a green Ford Mondeo is believed to have climbed into the lorry.
The lorry driver returned to his vehicle and continued his journey to the Co-op store at the corner of the High Street.
When parking his vehicle the driver spotted a man in the rear of the lorry, the offender left and jumped into the passenger seat of the Mondeo which is believed to have followed the lorry as it drove through the town centre.
Investigating officer PC Paul Overton, said: "I would ask anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area where we believe the offender entered the lorry or where he got out of the lorry to contact us with information.
"The driver had stopped at a store in Kent prior to Redhill and it may be that the green car had followed him for some time, if you believe you saw a car matching this description in suspicious circumstances which you believe may connect to this incident please share this with us."
It is believed cigarettes worth around £25,000 were taken in the theft.
The offender is described as a white man, with dark hair, around 5ft 10ins tall and of plump build. He was wearing a high-vis jacket at the time of the offence.
