CHILDREN found out where the food on their plates really comes from, on a field trip to their local Tesco.

A group of pupils from Charlwood Village Infant School explored the aisles of Tesco Extra, in Hookwood, on May 22.

Staff at the Reigate Road store gave the eager young inspectors an insight into the produce on show in the bakery, fish, food and vegetable sections.

Head teacher Vicky Lanham said: "The idea behind it is that the children get educated on where the food has come from.

"Each employee we spoke to talked about where the food comes from and told us a little bit more about what happens to the food before it gets to the supermarket, so the children understand it doesn't just come from the shelf.

"They learnt about the different foods by tasting, smelling and looking."

The inquisitive pupils were offered a selection of different cheeses to try as part of their experience, dubbed by the chain as "Farm to Fork".

Ms Lanham added: "They showed them the fish in quite graphic detail, which the children particularly liked.

"They got to see what the rolls looked like before they go in the oven and when they come back out.

"At the end they were all given a certificate and they all had a thoroughly lovely time. All the activities were very well thought out."

She added: "We use [the trip] it as a reward system for children who show good behaviour at lunchtime. They don't know who's going to go until the day before.

"Their parents know, but they're sworn to secrecy."
