AN EXCITING two days of racing kicks off at Epsom Downs today, attracting up to 150,000 people. The Investec Derby Festival, the largest annual event in Surrey and one of the biggest sporting events in the country, begins today with Ladies Day. The Investec Derby Day will be held tomorrow, with thousands of race-goers including celebrities, sporting stars and royalty expected to attend. Surrey Police will be out in force aiming to keep disruption to residents to a minimum. Many roads around Epsom Downs will have temporary alterations. Waterloo Road will be closed around Epsom Railway Station as part of plans to deal with the amount of visitors arriving in the centre of Epsom on Derby Day and traffic is likely to remain slow around Station Approach during peak hours. Superintendent Sharon Bush said: "Our number one priority over the weekend is to maintain public safety and security so that people can enjoy this wonderful event. While security measures have been put in place, I'd like to ask for the co-operation and vigilance of people attending to ensure everyone remains safe. "We will be working hard throughout the two-day festival to support the race organisers and assist them by minimising disruption to local people and ensuring that travel to and from the event is as trouble free as possible. "I'd also please ask for people to use public transport if they can and consider their journeys carefully. Those who must drive should exercise patience, allow plenty of time and park only in the clearly marked areas. Epsom town centre should also be avoided if you're driving."
