Redhill Cycling Club member Stuart Metcalfe celebrated his 70th birthday by cycling the best veterans' age-adjusted time in the club's time trial on Wednesday. He took 25 min 47 secs to cover the 10.1 mile course, 3:15 faster than the veteran standard for his age. Metcalfe is one of the seven septuagenarians in the club who are still cycling regularly, often out-pacing younger cyclists. They include Jim McKellar who was the oldest triathlete to finish in the Windsor Triathlon on June 15 and Michael Ormerod who recently rode 200 miles from London to Paris in 24 hours. Adrian Webb, Redhill chairman, said: "It is inspiring to know that you can continue cycling into a ripe old age. The number of older cyclists in the club, including a large group of 60-year olds, makes me think that cycling with Redhill Cycling Club definitely does prolong active life!"
