FIREFIGHTERS taught children how to react when they see a fire – including the vital stop, drop and roll manoeuvre.

A crew from Epsom fire station went to Co-operative Childcare, in Tadworth, to teach 16 three to five-year-olds how to stay safe.

The youngsters also had the chance to become honorary firefighters for the day on June 11, by donning the uniform, exploring the fire engine and learning how to use the hose.

Sally Bonard, nursery manager at Co-operative Childcare, said: "The children have been learning about the emergency services for the past few weeks, which is obviously a very important topic and one they have shown a great deal of interest in.

"They were extremely excited to welcome the fire crew into the nursery, and took some very valuable lessons from the day."

Among the day's lessons was the stop, drop and roll manoeuvre, which is used when a person's clothing or hair is on fire.

It involves stopping what you are doing, dropping to the floor and rolling around to put out the flames.
