Road improvements promised after young couple die in Oxted crash

URGENT action is being lined up to improve safety on a road where a young couple died.

Lee Palmer, 26, and his fiancee Hannah Sanders, 20, lost their lives in a two-car smash on a sharp bend in Titsey Road, Oxted, in April.

And back in 2008, a man in his 50s died in a two-car smash nearby.

The mothers of Lee and Hannah were at Surrey County Council's Tandridge Local Committee on Friday (27) to hear safety measures are being planned for the notorious road.

Oxted county councillor Nick Skellett said: "We are all horrified at what happened.

"We immediately thought is there something we could do to improve this road such as signs, speed restrictions and trying to even out the very apparent dips in the road?"

Calling for swift remedies Sally Marks, who represents Caterham Hill, said: "The families affected want something done as quickly as possible.

"As a matter of extreme urgency we need an advisory sign saying 'dangerous bend - accident blackspot'."

John Lawlor, the council's area highways team manager, said a temporary sign would be put up within days warning of the sharp bend in the road.

And highways officers will examine other options including reducing the 60 mph speed limit on that stretch, putting up vehicle activated signs and installing safety markings on the road surface.

Sharon Waite, who runs the Oxted Community Facebook page, had previously warned: "The introduction of speed signs at the approach to this bend should be installed immediately to slow people down on this bend. At the bottom of Titsey Hill people have naturally built up speed."

The combination of dips in the road and the angle of the sharp bend is "lethal", she added.

After the meeting Miss Sanders' mother Patricia told the Mirror: "I am pleased that something is being done about this road.

"Maybe us being at the meeting helped them treat the matter more urgently.

"But the council must have known it was a dangerous road before now.

"Has it taken the death of our children to get safety measures sorted out?"

Lee and Hannah were both former Oxted School pupils who worked at Morrisons supermarket in the town.
