CONCERTS held at Leatherhead Parish Church will return for a second season next year, after hitting the right note with audiences.

"Music on Thursdays" has been running weekly since March, at St Mary and St Nicholas Church in Church Road, and will return on April 18.

The programme, which was set up by parish church master of music Graham Davies and concert organiser Peter Steadman, has featured musicians and vocalists from around the world.

Mr Steadman said: "We have had a fantastic first season and are delighted to be able to tell everyone that, after a bit of doubt, we will be back after Easter.

"We have been honoured by the calibre and quality of performers who have performed for us in Leatherhead, and that has been reflected in the crowds that we've achieved.

"The music has been terrific, but the unexpected benefit has been the community that has come together through these concerts. Here's to another successful year in 2013."

Audiences of about 100 have enjoyed performances from Royal Academy of Arts students, local musicians and touring professionals at the free, hour-long events.

Speaking to the Advertiser after her performance last Thursday, cellist Anna Tam said: "This is my third time playing at Music on Thursdays and I have to say it is very enjoyable.

"It is a lovely venue and the crowd seems very grateful for the music they hear, which makes it all the more fun to play.

"I'm sure that, when the sessions return next year, I will get to play here again, as long as Graham and Peter want me."

Maureen Claygate, 82, of Leatherhead, said she hasn't missed a single concert since the sessions started.

"I have loved every minute of it so am quite upset that it is finishing," she said.

"Not only is the music great but afterwards everyone has a cup of tea and a nice chat, so it's very social too."

Surrey County Councillor Tim Hall said: "This is the first performance that I have been to and I wish that I had come sooner.

"It is so hypnotic and peaceful because when you listen to this sort of music, you can switch off from the world, so it's something that I will certainly try to come along to more often when it returns."

The final concert of this season is today at 12.30pm and will feature music from violinist Tianyun Jia and pianist Julia Hamos.
