TALENTED carpentry students at East Surrey College have created a unique seat to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

Twenty-three students at the Redhill college were tasked with creating a bench to be installed in Lesbourne Road, Reigate.

The idea came from Reigate and Banstead borough councillor Patsy Shillinglaw, who wanted to involve students in the project.

The students, guided by woodwork lecturer Tim Barnes, were asked to create a circular design from wood sourced and given by the borough council's countryside department.

After Mr Barnes made a prototype, the first year students set about making the two semi-circular benches.

Then, under the watchful eye of lecturer Roy Thrower, students stenciled poppies before the seating was varnished and weather-proofed. Cllr Shillinglaw praised the "wonderful collaborative project".

She said: "From a small seed of an idea has come a fabulous seating solution made by the students of East Surrey College in Redhill – truly a project for a local community.

"The wood to make the seating was resourced out of locally-grown trees.

"Thank you to everyone who has made the project come to life and a dream become reality."
