POLICE have rescued a woman from a river in Horley following calls from concerned members of the public.

PC Mark Fulham of Reigate and Banstead Safer Neighbourhood Team attended Riverside Garden Park at 3.30pm yesterday after the woman, in her 50s, was spotted entering the water.

PC Fulham assessed the situation and called for help from PCSO Maureen Langley, before wading in to assist the woman.

"I had to wait for a couple of colleagues to arrive because it wasn't easy to help her out on my own," said PC Fulham.

"I didn't think there was any significant risk of going in because the river was slow-flowing and we were only up to our waists, but it was still a distressing situation for those involved and who witnessed it.

"I wouldn't hesitate to do the same again and hope it demonstrates how much officers care about what they do."

The woman was later detained under the Mental Health Act.

An ambulance was also called to the scene.
