IT WAS a "record-breaking" weekend for Gatton Park as almost 2,000 people enjoyed its annual country fair.

The gardens in the grounds of Royal Alexandra and Albert School welcomed 1,800 visitors on Sunday.

The ninth annual event, which is the main fundraiser for the Gatton Park Trust, was the biggest yet, with a dog show, birds of prey display and punting on the lake attracting the largest crowds.

Fern Warwick-Ching, volunteer and community officer, said: "We had a lot more people than usual and everything just went really well. Because it wasn't as hot as last year, it was a bit better."

Children enjoyed rides on tractors and ponies as well as traditional games such as hook a duck and the coconut shy.

The Pimm's tent, new for this year, was also a hit with parents.

Gatton Park is usually only open to visitors on the first Sunday of every month.

Mrs Warwick-Ching added: "We don't open as often as people would like, as everyone tells us, so it's a lovely opportunity for people to come along and see the park.

"It's a lovely day out, even without the fair."

She added that plans for next year's fair include introducing canoeing on the lake.
