SUTTON and East Surrey Water has won a regional award for a multimillion-pound construction scheme.

The Redhill-based company was awarded the Engineering Excellence Community Benefit Award by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) for its 17km water main between Outwood reservoir and Buckland pumping station.

It says the new pipe – which was completed in April – will increase the effectiveness of its distribution network and secure water supplies in the future.

The £14 million scheme involved laying 800mm diameter pipeline along a route that went under two railway lines and three A-roads, below an oil pipeline and across a number of watercourses and roads.

The award was presented at a dinner at Henley-on-Thames on June 27.

Kevin Shilling, projects manager for Sutton and East Surrey Water, said: "This is a tremendous professional honour for the project team as we have been judged by our industry peer group. This was the most diverse and challenging civil engineering project Sutton and East Surrey Water has undertaken in its 150 year history."
