DOZENS of residents have benefited from the "fantastic" Whyteleafe Flood Appeal.

The collection, to aid those affected by the floods in February, raised £17,000 – almost double the initial target.

Donors included a young woman who gave a large handful of 2p coins and Caterham businessman David Gold, who wrote a cheque for £1,000.

There were also collections at churches in Whyteleafe and Caterham, fundraising events at the Whyteleafe Tavern, and a "wear yellow day" at de Stafford School in Caterham.

Many residents suffered flooded homes or gardens, and a stretch of the normally busy A22 Godstone Road was virtually a lake for several weeks.

The Reverend Tim Goode, vicar of St Luke's Church in Whyteleafe Hill, helped to organise the appeal.

He said: "The floods had a devastating impact on people's homes and lives in Whyteleafe.

"The one redeeming feature is that the entire community pulled together and generously provided financial assistance to 49 households that really needed it. We originally aimed to raise £10,000 so reaching £17,000 was just fantastic. On behalf of the Whyteleafe Flood Appeal Committee, I'd like to thank everyone who got involved."
