THE leader of Surrey County Council has made a U-turn on a decision to award himself and his deputy near-60 per cent increases in allowances.

Conservative councillor David Hodge made the climb-down today, in the same week local government minister Brandon Lewis said the authority was "showing contempt for hard-working families" by voting through massive pay increases.

Addressing a full council meeting, Mr Hodge said when he became leader he promised to "take decisions always in the best interest of Surrey residents".

He added he agreed with the council's "detailed and careful consideration" to award the pay increases, which were above the more modest recommendations put forward by an Independent Remuneration Panel.

But he decided to take a "personal decision" to reject the 60 per cent hike and accept the recommended level.

This means he will now earn £47,966, rather than the £55,418 voted through.

Deputy leader Peter Martin will also accept the IRP's proposal and take home £42,751.

It is unclear whether increases to other special responsibility allowances, which were also above the IRP's suggestions, will be reversed.

A Surrey Council Council spokeswoman defended the rises, saying they reflect the increased workload and responsibilities given to the council since the last pay review in 2010.
