HOWZAT! Former Surrey cricket stars converged on Caterham School on Sunday for a charity match.

More than 300 people enjoyed the afternoon in a beautiful setting as ex-county players took on a Caterham eleven in a Twenty20 match.

The event was in aid of St Catherine's Hospice.

The Crawley hospice provides respite care in the Tandridge area – and needs to raise £4 million annually from various fundraising events such as this.

Among the players was former England batsman Ali Brown, a former Caterham School pupil. He top-scored with 86, hitting 12 boundaries.

Surrey's 201-4 was too much for Caterham in a competitive match played in a friendly spirit.

Trevor Andrews from St Mary's Art Group, Caterham on the Hill, painted the scene throughout the game. "Silent" bids were submitted for his painting, with more than £200 eventually paid.

There was also a raffle, and an auction of a West Ham shirt and an England football shirt.

An orchestra from Valley Primary School, Bromley, entertained the crowds during the afternoon while the hospice's Tandridge Friends Group organised the tea and cakes tent.

Blends of Caterham provided hot food and Fullers stocked the beer tent. Waitrose and NatWest in Caterham provided staff from their branches to help out on the day, with NatWest additionally sponsoring the event.

Hopefully more than £2,000 will have been raised from the day.
