A SHEEP was killed and two others injured after they were attacked by a dog off its lead.

The bloodied animals were discovered on Reigate Hill, a Wildlife Trust site, on Saturday afternoon.

According to site chief ranger Mark Richards, Harry the ram was already dead, one of the sheep had a large open leg wound and the other a gash in its neck.

The offending dog – which is thought to be a cross between an Alsatian and a Labrador – was also found in the field by a volunteer who had gone to check on the animals.

The dog has been handed over to police who say they are trying to track down its owner.

As well as killing the ram, it is believed the attack has hampered the breeding schedule of the other animals on site.

Mr Richards said the dead ram was to be the prime impregnator during the mating season.

He is also concerned that the sheep which are currently pregnant could miscarry after being chased around the field by the dog.

"It's cost us £1,000 worth of stock," he said. "We have a huge problem with people not understanding about keeping their dogs under control.

"Even while we were there waiting for the police to arrive the amount of people walking their dogs with no leads was huge.

"They need to be aware of our livestock and keep their dogs on a lead because for dogs, it's just a game to chase the sheep around but then this happens."

Police are currently investigating the incident.

They should be able to find the dog's owner as the dog had a landline number attached to its collar.
